FEATURED PROJECT

Spinning-and-Winning

Creating an online shopping experience for Big Ass Fans that makes finding a fan a breeze

Project Overview

Big Ass Fans is not your typical home appliance manufacturer. Selling fans with diameters exceeding 25 ft. in length, Big Ass Fans has made a name for themselves by thinking outside the box fan.

When it came time for a new website, Big Ass Fans chose DBS Interactive to create a cutting-edge marketing site that would showcase their cooling and lighting solutions for B2B and B2C audiences. Throughout the redesign, I led the discovery process that informed the information architecture, wireframes and mockups. While creating the sitemap, I considered SEO to be a priority and suggested many additional pages, supporting a robust keyword strategy that could capitalize on the long-tail.

Shortly after launching their new website, we were challenged with creating a custom fan builder application for their Haiku brand of fans. I led the UX design of this application and worked closely with DBS Interactive’s lead developer to translate all business requirements into user stories. The fan builder was developed over several months and made its debut on their Magento ecommerce shop in 2015.

Information Architecture

Where can you hang a Big Ass Fan? Turns out, just about anywhere.

To reflect the versatility of their industrial fans on the new website, I recommended we create a robust B2B architecture that included pages for every industry and application that could benefit from a little cooling. This supported a long-tail keyword strategy and helped their sales people close deals by having dedicated landing pages to direct customers to.

Process Flow Mapping

A Haiku Built for You

In order for homeowners to effortlessly design their dream fan, the logic of the application we were building needed to make all the difficult decisions for them. I started the UX discovery process by creating a process flow map of all customization options for the fan.

There were many variables to consider including features of the room , fan diameter, and a large assortment of materials and finishes. The complexity came from the fact that each decision affected the later decisions one could make. For example, choosing an outdoor fan location eliminated later options such as bamboo as a material.

On-Page SEO

Big Ass Fans was responsible for writing the content of their new website, but I knew they couldn’t do it alone. To ensure that the content they were writing was to our specifications, I completed keyword research and created SEO content briefs to outline each template that our developers would need to build. Below are a few examples of page layouts from the website redesign.

Project Outcomes

Prior to the redesign, Big Ass Fans website ranked for very few non-brand keywords. The uniqueness of their product and brand had largely carried their success up until that point. However, after launching the new website with the expanded architecture, Big Ass Fans website experienced significant keyword growth for non-branded queries.
